Paris, 1908. A lively marital spat between Yvonne and her husband Lucien when he returns very late from a fancy-dress ball is interrupted by a messenger (Joseph) breaking the news that Yvonne's mother has died. In the confused commotion that ensues - Yvonne frantically distraught, Lucien elated - the messenger suddenly realizes that he is at the wrong apartment: the unhappy news was for the people next door! A relieved Yvonne perks up to resume the spat with her now thoroughly dejected husband!
