It sounded like an explosion more than a gun, not sharp but definitely loud enough to make me put my hands to my ears. And Barney.... Barney clutched the side of his face, spun a little and dropped like a stone. I bent down to Barney. He lay there limp and floppy like a broken doll. There was no sign of life. Over the fence there was a rustle of movement behind the tangle of junk there. A white face peered out.
