The play highlights the challenges, internal and external faced by a Quaker settler family in Upper Canada during the War of 1812. Central to the unfolding drama is the harsh treatment by a British officer of the father, a conscientious objector to the war based on his beliefs. This follows on the family's eldest son's attraction to a non-Quaker neighbour's daughter Rachel and, following her departure to the safety of the back country, his decision to join the war. With the father imprisoned, the son's unexpected return with Rachel brings acceptance, restores hope and helps the family survive.
