Written when Lestat was just gathering a following and long before Buffy and her offshoots came on the scene, The Crossroads is a postmodern dark romp with the old bloodsucker tradition. A sardonic vampire encounters, one after the other, three women in despair. One is sexually played-out. The second is intellectually played-out. The third is emotionally played-out. Playing upon their individual psyches with the instincts of a used-car salesman, he offers each of them the way to escape their entrapment: give him what he wants and transcend the wall of futility they have run into.
