A couple in their fifties, Sherwood and Caroline, meet a young man, Donald, who is intellectually challenged. Donald charms them with his innocence and high spirits. They rescue him from being sent to a care facility, and this adventure rekindles their love for one another. Caroline cannot stay the course. Sherwood and Donald die trying. Caroline and Anna (Donald's mother), enemies at first, forge a friendship.
