The play is set in the height of the Apartheid period in Cape Town, South Africa, and begins with preparations for the New Year Carnivals. Sena is in love with Ahlie, a Muslim who is known as the Sunshine Boy. Mrs. Daniels, her mother, a devout Christian, strongly disapproves of Ahlie. Her hopes rest in the brilliant future of her youngest son.
