Diarmuid is a young soldier who, while fighting in the Easter Rising in Dublin, boards a ship to take cover from the British. However, the ship leaves the port, sending him to Halifax, Nova Scotia. There, he meets a fellow Irishman, Terrence and the lovely bondservant, Maggie. But despite his attempts to settle in and create a new life, he soon realizes that his demons will not leave him alone.
