A Hard Place (Male Lead Version) by Don Macrae

Bill and his son, Michael, and Michael’s wife, Leah, have shared the same house for many years. Bill, a once successful university professor and published poet, is recovering, albeit reluctantly, from a stroke he suffered five years ago. He and Michael have never had any kind of meaningful relationship. Today would be a good day for them to connect. Today, Bill is being moved into a retirement residence. Michael and Leah are separating, and there is no way either will be able to take care of Bill. Bill can only utter a word or two now and then, making it almost impossible for him to communicate with the others. We, the audience, hear his every thought, however. We also see and hear his deceased wife, Marg, whom Bill talks with quite regularly. This part of his unconscious finally convinces him to try to write again, which opens the door to a new and more meaningful dialogue between Bill and Michael.
