Egdar and Winnie have put in their time navigating the frantic streets of life. They have raised children, concluded careers, and are now enjoying the leisurely pace and, where desired, solitude of retirement. Their home, situated on a quiet hill overlooking Toronto, has all the markings of a peaceful place.
The illusion is shattered, however, when Melvina, Winnie’s niece, announces she is coming to stay “a few days”, with her husband Calvin and two young children in tow. While Winnie is excited at the prospect of reconnecting with family, and also getting to fill her empty nest with life, tension mounts in Egdar right away. He is wary of house guests, who too often turn out to be ungrateful users here only for the free lodging. That the visitors are also pumped about getting to take in some live Toronto Blue Jays playoff-drive action while they’re here makes the timing of it all suspicious as well.
Egdar and Winnie scarcely know the adult Melvina, the families having drifted apart after the kids were grown. They remember the boisterous, unshy teenager. To Egdar’s great angst and Winnie’s disappointment, the adult version arrives with reputation intact. It is a rowdy flock that descends on this unsuspecting house, marauding past protocol and pretence to merrily consume, without a modicum of situational awareness, whatever’s before them in an expense-free vacation destination.
Will Melvina and Calvin ever figure out that an Airbnb with the host on site might not be the best idea? How long can Egdar “be nice” just to please his wife? How long before even Winnie tires of being the hostess with the mostest? Will the tension put a strain on everyone’s relationship? Sooner or later something’s got to give, and baseball might no longer be the only game in town.
