Ron Laney, brings his wife, Joanne, with him when he accepts a job as the position of doctor a logging camp in remote northern Ontario in 1912. He is quickly lured away by the frontier adventures that the job offers and abandons Joanne in the logging camp where she becomes increasingly lonely. She finds solace in the local women's club and in the attentions of the charming camp superintendent, Frank. In the magnificent old growth pine forest, she meets and befriends an Ojibwe elder, Grandmother, who becomes a mentor.
Logging on the frontier is a dangerous business, and Ron, Joanne, and Grandmother will come to mourn the lost of so much they hold close to their hearts. But they will also find a way forward through the grief.Â
