The title Never the 51st State was inspired by the continued references by a US president to his intention to annex Canada. So this play begins when the Americans actually did invade this country in an unprovoked act of imperial aggression in 1812-14 war. The play concludes in Ukraine as Russia attempts to make that country it's '51st state' by it's full scale invasion in 2022.
This play is about the struggle for independence and nationhood. It is a play about individuals caught in the middle of conflicts, the human costs of war and the passion among those fighting to survive in a world seemingly gone mad. It is a Canadian play and Canadians feature in both conflicts in this story.
Finally, bridges play a unifying role in the telling of this story, beginning and ending the play with their own stories and how they helped shape the outcome of the conflicts and contributed to nationhood.
