Mary is a story of a traditional grandmother living in a very traditional and rural community. I draw a parallel between the grandmother and the community in terms of what they lose. More and more people leave her family and community. Yet, she, and her home continue to give and give.

Mary: Theyβre not wrong you know. What the girls are saying makes perfectly good sense. I can understand what it is they want, but I just want them all here β all of them β in this house. I know itβs not a reasonable request on my part, but I love them all so much. Every time I see young Andrew, sure, I can see my Dave and his own father too for that matter.
This house hasnβt changed since I moved in here with Dave. Every morning when the kettle boils and I sees the steam cominβ up out of it I can smell my Dave cominβ up the hall. I canβt see him anymore, but I know heβs still here with me.
Every morning when the sun breaks over the top of the hills, I can see him walking down the garden path. He with his lunch bag in one hand and he would turn and wave to me with the other.
Remember it?! I do more that remember it. I live through it all almost every day. Itβs like I read the same book day after day β chapter by chapter.
