George and Helen have been through a lot over the years. George’s gambling on the horses has caused stress in their relationship, and cost Helen half her inheritance. But George has turned his life around and is now one year clean of the racetrack and betting of any kind. Encouraged, Helen has taken the last of her inheritance and bought the funeral parlor Heavens’ Door Funeral Home with the hopes of starting a new life for the two of them. It is now the morning of their first funeral- a celebration of the life of local socialite, Mrs. Higston Briggs, mother of the Attorney General, Senator Higston Briggs. It is to be a huge affair, but they do not have to carry it off all on their own as they have the assistance of the capable Pomeranian triplets, the Hindlicher sisters. Today is the first day of the rest of their lives and the future looks bright until George’s former bookie shows up, simply to wish him well, but then things are never simple with Rodney. And then George receives the results of his recent medical examination and Rodney becomes the least of his problems.
