Once Upon a Hot Dog by Nelles Van Loon

Corporate whiz kid, Ernie Faust, burns out and rediscovers himself as the city's best known hot dog vendor. An offer he can't refuse from Arthur Dark lures him back to the corporate life. Ernie discovers he was happier selling hot dogs, but it’s hard to walk away when you’ve sold your soul to get there.

There is a larger than life quality of about Arthur along with echoes of Donald Trump and the sense of a man walled in from reality, terrified of the truth about his fragile sense of self. Ernie is not a real threat to Arthur, but like Milton’s Satan, Arthur knows he has a capacity for happiness forever lost to him. He lures Ernie into his sphere not only because he will prove useful in promoting the big lie, but for the satisfaction of robbing him of simple pleasures.

The story is as timeless as the Faust legend. It’s also about the power of the big lie and the devaluation of truth.
