A Dominion Inquiry was conducted, and regional newspapers reported the tragedy in depth.

The work is a folk musical, containing a large cast of characters, with a small core of lead roles, there is a chorus (not always in song). It explores shipping practices that led to the catastrophe, and is a study of individuals under duress, including a young man and a young woman who did not know one another beforehand but ended up being the only survivors via the captain's lifeboat reaching one of the Limestone Islands where they were rescued by two Ojibway blueberry pickers and taken to Parry Sound.

This is a play that requires imaginative but simple solutions to staging, a set that comes apart when the ship does after the hurricane hits it would help, rapid costume changes by some actors with multi-roles should be made. This remains a work of playbox theatre. Despite the tragic events, there needs to be a gentle humour undergirding the production, a cast that can sing without going off key is essential, character voices. An eye for the ironic and a light touch also help as would gravitas by all performers.

Keywords: Georgian Bay, tragedy, survival, investigative judgement

An earlier version of the work was produced by The Petun Community Play Project in 1994 and 1995.

Genre: Drama, Play with Music, Historical/Biography, Dark Comedy
Acts: 4
Run time: 120 minutes
Suitable for students 14+
Content notes: Contains content about tragic losses.

Cast size: 12 actors
Male roles: 8
Female roles: 4
Casting notes: The Newsman is a central propelling force in keeping the plot unfolding, in the first year it was played by a woman dressed as a man.
The music is folk based, and live performed, some of the actors play instruments.
Gender, while defined by specific individuals historically involved in the events, are not really a concern as most roles are costume fluid relative to who is playing the role.
