Hoddinott & Janice Hoddinott

Antony Catelli is anxious for his wife Roberta to join him in retirement, so that the rest of their lives can really begin. But he isn’t interested in the usual wind-down of lived experience, where the rhythm of sunrises and sunsets becomes but a stand-in for the yoke of calendars and commutes they’ve laid down, where the creep of life passages becomes the new headline generator (and also the new threat), and where the embrace of ridiculous pastimes to fill the space in between is what one uses to convince oneself that just being alive is good enough. No, no and no. His vision of the well-deserved “hereafter” (that comes before the compelled one) includes the freedom of open highways, eco-friendly glamping, and maybe even a tricked-out electric “shaggin’ wagon” as their ride.

Problem is, Roberta doesn’t quite view the future through the same tinted glasses. Life, while reasonably successful and well-lived, has come with a seismic shift or two — including personal tragedy — and she is experiencing the scars differently than is Antony. Besides, hers has been a fulfilling career in the corporate world and she is in no rush to pack it in. Complicating things is the ever-widening gulf of silence wedged between the Catellis and their beloved daughter Nora — an eerie “presence” everyone can sense but no one can quite conceptualize. Then there is their busybody neighbour, Mavis Mitch, who has all manner of “helpful” advice for Roberta, most of it serving to diminish Antony and undermine his best efforts.

One-sided schemes to resolve the impasse blow up spectacularly in Antony’s face, creating a whole other set of seismic circumstances that might just blow his best laid plans to kingdom come.

Along the way we get to see the “in between” in action: between deeds and consequences, between worlds and cataclysms, and even serving as a metaphysical bridge that spans the gulf between loss and acceptance — perhaps even between the here-and-now and… well...

Antony’s imagined joyride turns out to be a bumpy one indeed.
