"I need to tell you something: You may think that I'm lying, but I'm not. I'm telling you the truth. Even if, right now, in this moment, it feels like I'm not being truthful, because I'm telling you that I will be truthful, I am being truthful. And I will be. Truthful."
A woman encounters a man from her past and is disturbed by the strange power he still holds over her. In her attempts to uncover the truth of what happened between them, she evokes her 13-year-old self: a synchronized swimmer struggling to make sense of her burgeoning sexuality. Humourous and dark, Mortified explores adolescent sex, shame and transformation and how we reckon with the traumatic experiences that shape us.

Mortified feels whole and perfect in the same way that a body can feel whole and perfect: it’s just that organic, sensual—and complicated."
the very fearlessness of Mortified is the biggest strength in a play that has many.
In this #MeToo moment, Rutherford is drawing from real-life experience to shade in the complexities of consent and shame. And 25 years later, society is sending teen girls more mixed messages than ever. If you know one, or you were one who made mortifying mistakes of your own, you need to see this show."
Taking on the suffocating feeling of a young woman dealing with sexual assault and trauma, Mortified does so with grace and humour. It is a beautiful and memorable piece of theatre that will not be easily forgotten."
